Delivery services are now a part of daily life in the United States, integrated into the routines of most Americans. At the same time, the practice of tipping delivery drivers who bring meals to customers’ doors has sparked discussions about its significance.

Currently, 98% of American consumers choose to leave a tip when ordering food for delivery, typically ranging between 15% and 20% of the total meal cost.

Tipping is seen as a way to recognize the efforts of delivery drivers, who often earn low wages. To make it easier, delivery apps and restaurants provide systems that allow customers to add money.

What Is the Ideal Tip Amount for US Deliveries?

There is no universal rule for tipping, but data from Upgraded Points reveals that most Americans tip between 15% and 20%. Three out of four consumers follow this practice.

Only 14% of customers tip below this average, making tipping a well-established tradition in the country. However, this custom can confuse tourists, making it essential to review bills carefully to avoid excessive charges.

While tipping in restaurants often causes debate, only 2% of delivery customers report skipping tips. The effort required for deliveries is one reason many consider this practice important.

In recent years, the convenience has led Americans to order food more frequently, whether for casual meals or specific needs, such as office lunch delivery.

Are Tips for Delivery Mandatory in the United States?

Tipping is not legally required in the United States, whether for food delivery or other services. However, it is considered a social norm, and failing to tip may be viewed negatively.

In restaurants, for example, some waitstaff have been known to directly ask customers why they didn’t leave a tip. In delivery services, neglecting the practice can cause discomfort, given the effort delivery drivers put into their work.

This tipping culture is also linked to the low hourly wages paid to waitstaff and delivery drivers, making gratuities a crucial supplement to their income.

How Does Tipping Influence Delivery Drivers?

Offering a fair tip can positively influence the quality of service provided by delivery drivers. Many drivers serve the same areas regularly and may interact with repeat customers.

While delivery drivers are expected to perform their duties professionally regardless of tips, showing appreciation for their work can help maintain a positive relationship and prevent awkward situations.

Economic challenges in the United States have stimulated debates over the necessity of tipping and its impact on finances. Nonetheless, for those who can afford it, the practice remains an effective way to show appreciation for the hard work of delivery professionals.
